1. When we became independent in 1957 nobody gave us much of a chance to make any progress beyond what had been achieved under the British.
2. I myself at that time thought that the only difference independence would make would be Malaysians would take over the administration of the country from the British. Nothing much more than that.
3. The other day I was given a copy of a news sheet called "Opinion" of November 1968, which I remember was edited and produced by Sulaiman Alias, one of the young political activist in UMNO.
4. It was quite a liberal paper and contained articles by such well-known personalities as Dr Lim Chong Eu (Gerakan), Dr R Kumar (Labour Party), Lim Kit Siang (DAP), Syed Hussain Ali (Parti Rakyat), Tengku Zaid (PMIP), Goh Cheng Teik, Ismail Ghani and several others.
5. I was also a contributor writing "In Defense of Feudalism". I was a Member of Parliament then.
6. The article that most interested me was one by Dr Lim Chong Yah, an economist, entitled "The Future of Malaysian Economy".
7. In it he gave a picture of the Malaysian Economy in 1967, 10 years after Merdeka.
8. The population was a mere 10 million and we were reproducing at 3.7% per annum. Our death rate had decreased from 12% to 7% which resulted in a natural increase of 3% p.a., a high rate, he noted.
9. Assuming decreasing death rate and also decreasing birth rate, the 3% population growth would likely continue over the next 10 years bringing the population to 13 million in 1977.
10. Dr Lim thought that national income should increase at 3% p.a. over the 1967 per capital (sic) income of USD940 p.a. But at 3% rate of growth the gap between us and the rich countries would widen.
11. Still the other developing countries would be behind us. However at 3% growth we would not be able to create jobs at 100,000 p.a. The rate of growth of national income should be 5%.
12. Investment growth (domestic) would not be able to do this.
13. If foreign investment makes up 4% of growth then it may be possible to achieve the necessary rate of investment for creating 100,000 jobs per annum.
14. It was a time when the rubber estates and tin mines were still owned by foreigners. Bringing in foreign capital sounded like increasing overdependence on foreign enterprise. We did not quite relish the idea of more foreign involvement in our newly independent country.
15. But without capital inflow unemployment would be 200,000 by 1977. Together with 160,000 unemployed in 1967, the rate would go up to 360,000, a horrendous figure.
16. The 360,000 did not include a large number of under-employed workers.
17. In the second five-year plan the public section was to spend 4,500 million Ringgit of which 1,900 million Ringgit was to come from foreign sources (borrowing).
18. Malaysia would have to depend on foreign capital inflow. Dr Lim remarked that political independence had not freed us from dependence on foreign capital. Still, he said, it was consistent with political independence. He named several developed countries which depended on foreign capital inflows.
19. He then turned to the rubber industry which was undergoing great difficulties because of the increasing usage of synthetics. He concluded that the difficulties of the rubber industry was also the difficulty of the nation in view of the strategic and preeminent role the industry occupied in the Malaysian economy.
20. The United States was making things more difficult through the release of their rubber stockpile. I remember being invited by Mr Bell, the American Ambassador to tea and I raised this matter. I was shocked when the Ambassador said that it was important for the US economy to keep rubber prices low. I told him that rubber prices were more critical to a small country like Malaysia than to a huge diversified economic power like America. But he did not care what happened to Malaysia. Yet at that time we looked up to America as a friend and liberator.
21. Rubber prices went down from 108.00 cents per pound to 68.14 cents. At the time Dr Lim wrote his article it was 50 cent per pound. The kampong people suffered grievously.
22. The other major source of income for Malaysia was tin. Already the production was decreasing.
23. We may be surprised but after tin came iron ore. We produced 7.3 million tons in 1963 but the production was going down. We produce no iron ore for export today.
24. Dr Lim predicted that income from rubber, tin and iron ore would decrease by 1977.
25. But the picture was bright for palm oil. In 1957 we exported 58.5 thousand tons of palm oil. By 1966 we exported 178.0 thousand tons.
26. Imagine how small we were then. Today if I am not mistaken we export more than 12 million tons at RM 3,000 plus per ton = 36,000,000,000 i.e. 36 billion Ringgit per year - well over the total public development estimate of 4,000 million Ringgit for the second five year plan (of course the Ringgit bought more than it does now).
27. Other than these we expected to earn something from timber, canned pineapple and pepper.
28. Dr Lim believed that growth would be from the domestic sector, with public sector contributing much towards it.
29. From Dr Lim's paper, presented at a forum organised by the National Union of Malayan Students at the University of Malaya, it did not seem likely that Malaysia would grow to what it is today. Yet Dr Lim was optimistic. He expected political stability to contribute towards Malaysia's development.
30. I write this in order to remind ourselves as to what we were like before. In 1967 no one thought of a Malaysia like what it is today. We did not think of industrialisation. We saw ourselves as a producer of raw materials.
31. Foreign Direct Investment was an unknown term when Dr Lim Chong Eu invited foreign industrialists in the early 70s to invest in the electronic industry on liberal terms. Prior to that we had insisted that all foreign industries must accept Malaysian Equity Participation (before NEP).
32. Only National or Matsushita came. But later we gave priority to job creation to benefit not those with money to invest but the unemployed workers. That was the best decision the Malaysian Government ever made.
33. Today Malaysia is more prosperous than the other countries which attained independence together with us. There is not a single race, not a single person, whatever may be his or her station in life who can honestly say that he or she has gained nothing from the independent Governments of Malaysia.
34. We are all the beneficiaries of the policies of those early people who lead this country. The systems and policies they initiated were excellent. If they seem not to work today it is not because they were bad but it is because we do not have their caliber. We have become very selfish and too materialistic. This country has given us much. Is it still the country we love? I wonder!

Viva Tun berdua.

Dear TUN,
You are right Dr. M. It is not becoz the system, but it because the attitude of every single person including the leaders who do not have caliber to handle all the problem. Love u Tun...
Dear Tun
Is this the same Dr Lim Chong Yah you're referring to in your article? http://www.hssapps.ntu.edu.sg/faculty/econ.asp?u=ACYLIM
If he is, he's now an Economics Professor at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
It would be nice if you could reproduce your old articles, together with the journals that you discussed.
Best regards.
Good Day Dr M
All the previous PMs, with the people support, did their best.I believe we have several leaders like Muhyiddin, Najib etc who will continue Malaysia quest for the developed world.
Asmkm,

Dear Tun,
1.A reminder to all of us is really what we need on and off. Therefore we could trace back our past time and how we moved. From an raw producer nation we step a head in to industrial based country. Parallel to the other dev-country, we as said two steps in front them.
2. A question rise that, are we backwarding nowdays (due to paklah govern) can sustain our economic growth as he mention?
"This country has given us much. Is it still the country we love? I wonder! "
- Taking back from what you quoted above, it is definitely the country that I still love, the only chaos currently going on in the country with a huge burden on price hike and inflation is due to your poor selection of your next keen. Due to that, we Malaysian still believe and have love for our country, as it was all of us brought our "Tanah" to where it is today. It is also us that brought our situation to what it is today.
Yes MML again. Melayu Mudah Lupa. Only this time we should need to include all the other races as well.
I Thank You from the tips of my hair (dari hujung rambut) to the ends of my feet (ke hujung kaki) for all what you have done for me, my family, my relations and I extend it to the whole of Malaysia.
I don't know about some of the people here, but I was running a business back in 1997 and I can tell you, but for YOUR efforts, we wouldn't have come out of that mess like we did and be where we are now, or where we were until Abdullah Badawi took over I mean.
I cried when I re-read what Nor Mohamed Yaakop wrote in 2003 about you. It didn't make that much of an impression for me back when I first read it, I do admit, but after the Abdullah Badawi years, I fully understand it now.
http://jebatmustdie.wordpress.com/2008/06/05/oh-my-god-is-this-pm-stupid/
Anyway, for all those who didn't like you, don't like you or never will like you, don't mind them. It has, is and always be a waste of time, space, and energy to argue with them, as especially a lot of those people who don't like you, love and cherish DSAI and / or Karpal Singh anyway. Nuff said.
Please know there are average Malaysians like me who did like you, do like you and will always like you, and thank you and cherish you for all the good things you have done for all of us.
Once agan, Tun, Thank You from the bottom of my heart.
Assalamualaikum Buat Tun yang Sentiasa Dihormati,
I'm crying when i've finish reading your post today.
i as a youth love this country so much..the political and economic scene in malaysia sadden us..therefore change must be made fast..
Ayuh, rakyat M'sia, mari kita paksa DS Abdullah Badawi letak jawatan. Perdana Menteri paling lemah dalam sejarah M'sia!!!
ASSALAMUALAIKUM TUN
Sekian Terima Kasih.
asalamualaikum tun n family, feel realy gud reading ur article, juz cant get enuf...may ALLAH bles u, :)
Yeah, that was then...but what's happenning to our country? Confusion and uncertainties are everywhere. Nobody knows who is telling the truth anymore!
Dear Tun,
Does the current government has a plan going forward? Simple, easily understood plan is sufficient. No need fancy english etc. Just a simple plan.I just want to know.
It's all about planning and execution. We used to have that in abundance during Tun's time and I guess even before Tun's time ... and we all works towards implementing them - very focus.
Now, I am not so sure. At least I am not aware of them.
Nice entry form tun...
Jazakallahul khair...
Some day.. out of the rainbow.. People shall come to their senses. Dirty politician.. shall step down.. n the people who is sincere to serve the country shall rise and.. bring us back to the glory again.. Question is.. who should that be.. our saviour? and what can we do.. to ensure that.. some day.. is sooner rather later..before all is ruined.. feeding the greed of the dirty politicians today..
Good Afternoon Tun.
May you and your family blessed with the best of health and happiness!
SALAM..i am crying when i read what you got to say about malaysian past,i am so proud of you,as a malaysian i salute you SIR!!!
may ALLAH bless you and your family...we buildd this beautiful country of ours, because we believe we can..SALAM!!!!
Tun,
This is really touching facts... Should let more people know about these. Hope the press will publish more works from you.

Malaysia will forever be the country I love.
Nobody can deny my instinct to defend and protect my own country.
" If they seem not to work today it is not because they were bad but it is because we do not have their caliber." - I absolutely agree.
Racism and racial discrimination have been part of Malaysia social, political, economic and cultural realities ever since colonial times.
Today, race has been so deeply institutionalised that it is a key factor determining benefits from social policy, government development policies, entry into educational institutions, education policy, discounts for purchasing houses, cultural policy, bids for business contracts and other official policies.
Practically every aspect of Malaysian life is permeated by the so-called 'bumis policy' based on malay-centrism. This is unabashedly spelled out by political leaders in the daily mass media in Malaysia.
It is an established fact that racial polarisation is prevalent in various Malaysia institutions. A survey by University Malaya shows that 98 percent of malay students do not mix with non-malays while 97 percent of Indian students and 99 percent of Chinese students do not mingle with the other races.
While the government tries to account for this problem by blaming other extraneous factors such as the existence of vernacular schools, it is clear that the roots of polarisation lie in this institutionalisation of racism and racial discrimination.
The ruling party Umno prides itself on the supposedly 'successful' affirmative action in favour of bumis. Bumis literally means 'princes of the soil', the official epithet for malays and other indigenous peoples but which excludes the original peoples, i.e. the Orang Asli of Peninsula Malaysia. This has been the cornerstone of development plans since the New Economic Policy was started in 1971.
Consequently, while this populist bumis policy has been applied to the benefit of bumis as a whole, the new malay ruling elite is strategically placed to reap the full benefits of this racially based policy.
Totally committed to capitalism and to privatisation, this policy has ensured that the non-malay local and foreign elite have also gained from the New Economic Policy since 1971. This class cohesion among the Malaysia ruling elite underpins the racialist politics which has characterised Malaysian society since independence.
Racial discrimination in the realm of culture is seen not only in the education policy but also in the discrimination against non-malay cultures and religions in the National Cultural Policy. Non-Muslims face obstacles in their freedom to build places of worship and access to burial grounds, among other complaints.
Racism and racial discrimination have dominated Malaysian society for far too long. Now that the malay ruling elite has clearly gained control of the Malaysia economy, it is high time for a new consensus based on non-racial factors such as sector, need and class to justify affirmative action.
Thank You Tun for reminding us of our journey as a nation. Reminded me that when much is given, much is expected.
May God richly bless you.
Salam Tun, :)
What a good explanation, somehow I feel proud of my country, yea Malaysia is small, but we r much better than many other countries, for the peacefulness...etc, I won't taste all this if I was born as other countries' citizen, :D Feel very grateful to the past leaders and contributors who had done so much for us.Hopefully Malaysia will continue to be in peace since current politic situation really made me feel worried(a lot), not to mention the economy now... =_= Oh yes, after climax, usually is anti-climax, hope that's not applicable to M'sia.
May God bless u and ur family. Have a great Sunday.
Thank you very much for leading Malaysia all the way.
I hope I could contribute and defend well to this country just as our leaders had.
They should have sent you to for the debate. That is only IF they have a good relationship with you which make it impossible.
The debate should only talk about the government plans for increasing the oil price. It was a terrible thing to come out without preparing the facts and the government's plans for increasing the oil price. (If there is. There should be, right ? ) It should be a SIMPLE debate. Anwar couldn't do anything about that. When he was out of points, he attacked Anwar's character instead. It was a total embarrassment. Now Anwar is gaining popularity more than before. People are more willing to listen to him.
dear tun,
the patriotism of past leaders and their struggles remains to be etched in the minds of our young. we often do not emphasized enough in our history/geographical books about the birth of our nation. i appreciate your reminder and i guess this is the darkest period of modern Malaysia. How will will the historians write of us in the future?
the Government now lacks the political will to rule. I am not surprised if the current PM will invoke the ISA to throw individuals into quiet submission within the year.
in the end, all the politicians would do is to salvage a sunken ship. for most, many who have enriched themselves will leave this land. bumi puteras, patriots - i think not.
for many a times, we read the news, we forget the past and hope that it remains buried and forgotten. that is the way Malaysians behave and how our leaders want us to forget.
So, Tun, thank you for constantly reminding us to stay on the middle path and the aspirations of our Merdeka, our Social Contract and the Constitution.
tun,
i beg u,pls save the country, dont let those idiot exspecially the budak tingkat empat claimed from oxford destroy the country, and destroy the development that u have done...we ares o weak until singapore dare to challenge us maybe the next is philippine try to claim sabah...pls do something.......we also dont want anwar the drama king become pm..
ASSALAMUALAIKUM TUN,
I LOVE THIS COUNTRY...
YES WE BECOME SELFISH AND MATERIALISTIC... AND OUR LEADER HAVE NO CALIBRE...
SAD
Tun..
dont compare with the 3rd class nations... we have economic inflation now... i can say that thre r a lot of problems we facing.....
yea i agree that our nation is prosperous but the people still remain poor...
Thanks Tun for bringing Malaysia from agricultural base country to industrial base country. I salute your entitlement of being a a Tun honor than any others in the country.
I believe in the deep vain of every countrymen of Malaysian, we all love our country very much.
hi tun..
thanks for all the info u hv given to us..
i am also grateful for what the country has given us..
but a lot of people now have forgotten if the government was not doing what it had done.
now.. eventhough there are people serving the country selflessly
still there are others that think only for themselves. by taking what ever they please from the country's treasury through legal means.
i am sad with the country condition now.. i just wish.. somebody is strong enough to do something b4 it is too late..
keep it up tun.. your words are inspiration and the light of hope for the people..
ASSALAMUALAIKUM TUN,
THANK YOU FOR REMEMBERING US...
SAD...
http://anakmalaysia81.blogspot.com/
We made a decision to emigrate to Australia 15 years ago deserting my high fly corporate position with our three children.
If history could turn back, we would still do the same.
It is a joke when our three children are fully qualified in their respective professions, then our Malaysian leaders only realize that "Actually English is very important in this era of globalization, let us go back to English again in our primary school for science and mathematics subjects".
It is fortunate that we had our own thinking and were able to jump out from this "black box" of trial and error type of management in practically every aspect of the government administration machinery. As a result, our children do not waste their precious years.
Our children enjoy the experience of equal opportunity not only in education but also in employment. That has a very strong impact in character development because then they believe in themselves, i.e. their own ability and equal opportunity available for personal development to the fullest extent.
And they could fight for their own rights too simply because the environment encourages them to do so, i.e. freedom to think, and freedom to express. They enjoy their work in their respective professions and they have both close Australian and Asian friends.
The Australian authority treats the problem of racial discrimination very seriously and takes action very fast. I still remember those days when my youngest son was teased by certain racial remarks by his schoolmate. My wife reported the case to the school authority and after a proper investigation, the Aussie kid was made to make a public apology to my son and was suspended a week from school attendance.
Australia herself is a country of migrants from all over the world, the Italians, the British and other Europeans also never give up their citizenships although they may stay for over many many years. If they tell you to go back to China, you have equal right to tell them to go back to whatever country they come from. "Fight for your right" is the spirit.
What we are concerned is actually the management of the country. There is enough wealth to be distributed among all the people who can theoretically enjoy better education, better life and medical facility. But poor management and the evil "corruption" have eroded away what the people deserve. If people demand a change, "racialism" is always a powerful tool to protect the regime.
The Australian government extinguishes any little spark that concerns racial issue. There are strict laws and they are very good in enforcement. The two party systems ensure no one monopolizes the government. If the government is not good, people will vote it out for sure.
It is a land of plenty, and of equal opportunity for everyone. One will make his way if he is prepared to seize the opportunity and work hard for it. No one believes in "God" will give, and most believes the creation and reward from their own hands and intelligence.
Though we pay high taxes, the future is more or less ensured as in case we are sick or in difficulty, we have all the assistance from the authority. It is the right for every kid in Australia to have the opportunity to finish his tertiary education if he could make an attempt and possible financial assistance is always there.
Australia's economy is very robust now and most universities graduates and school leavers are doing very well. My three kids who are qualified as professionals at a very young age are doing very well. They would not have achieved that type of level if we were to remain in our country of birth. Thank God!
We face less racial discrimination in workplace and university in Australia than in our country of birth.
The ironical fact is that we are being treated more a first class citizen in our host country than in our own country.
Human rights, good administration, equal opportunity and transparency convince us that it is no point wasting our precious time in our own country.
If you really miss our own country, earn and save more money in the host country and join the shiver hair program later on. If you have the money, any country will welcome you for sure.
In general, it is an educated society. People talk not shout, and people reason not accuse and more over, it is a much cleaner and more beautiful place to live. I am pleased with my decision and have no regrets at all.
hi tun..
thanks for all the info u hv given to us..
i am also grateful for what the country has given us..
but a lot of people now have forgotten if the government was not doing what it had done.
now.. eventhough there are people serving the country selflessly
still there are others that think only for themselves. by taking what ever they please from the country's treasury through legal means.
i am sad with the country condition now.. i just wish.. somebody is strong enough to do something b4 it is too late..
keep it up tun.. your words are inspiration and the light of hope for the people..
Salam Ayahanda Tun, this is maybe somewhat off topic and I duly apologize fir it, but I feel that it’s all the same an important matter.
On instances when non Malay raise issues on Malay rights and the NEP it would be looked upon as raising knowledge and basic rights on a supposed disparity. On the same account, when a Bumiputera reply to the issue, almost automatically and in a near concerted effort the Bumiputera would be labeled as racist. Why is this so? I believe I might have an explanation to this quandary.
But firstly may I propose that the phrase “special Malay rights” or “hak keistimewaan orang-orang Melayu”, “ketuanan Melayu” be changed to “basic Malay rights” or “hak-hak asasi Melayu”. It’s plain to see we are not asking for anything special, we are just insisting on our basic rights as economic minorities in our own country. “Hak-hak asasi Melayu” simply means that we want our basic rights to the economy and its chain, some fair chances at education and a simple start at living. If our government (which it did not) had done what Mugabe did by taking back all white own lands and giving it back to the deserving ethnic black, perhaps only then it could be termed as “special rights” as it must have been done in manners that may have sidelined certain aspect of fairness and rights in obtaining the desired results- I believe that conjures some kind of “special rights”. However in this country we do not practice that kind of “special rights” at all.
Look at the imbalances today, on my lay-man level, do tell me- how many Malay vendors selling hand phones at malls? Almost none. Why? Cause a certain race had dominated this segment very tightly, because they know that mobile telecommunications is an absolute must and so that’s where the money is and that’s where control must be. Look at the IT sector; back in the 80’s its all non-Malays dominated industry. Malay could only buy PC and be recommended to get finances (also owned by non Malays) by these non Malay PC vendors. This goes for the construction and transport industries too. But beginning the early 90’s under Tun Dr. Mahathir’s brilliant policies and tactile implementations, we see Bumiputeras venturing into these sectors of business. However, struggle as hard as we want- the make or break economic supply chain of today is still solidly in the grasp of a certain uncompromising group.
Yet until today the very word Bumiputera is almost unmentionable to a self centering non Malay. Why? Because for over 50 years it had been erroneously understood as “entitlement to special privileges”. We must begin to correct this misapprehension.
It took America over two hundred and thirty two years to get to where it is today; for black Obama of slave ancestry to the all imposing Democrat Presidential Nomination over the white and golden slave owner ancestry Hillary. Therefore in just thirty years for the NEP to bear fruits is hurried and wishful thinking at best.
As recent back as in 1955, American Negroes weren’t even allowed to sit on white’s only public buses seats in America. Taking this observation closer to our point, the Los Angeles riots of 1992, also known as the Rodney King uprising by the locals, were spark when a jury acquitted four police officers accused in the videotaped beating of black motorist Rodney King. Thousands of people in the Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley area rioted for a week following the verdict. Widespread looting, firearms assault, arson, and rampant murder occurred. Property damages totaled over one billion USD.
At least 53 people died during the riots. Civilities were replaced by anger and just in matter of hours; all civil orders and calm were raged and suspended. Streets were empty, phone lines went dead and sirens wailed along with machine gun armed National Reserved Guards patrolling all perimeters of the war zone. This was America, the same noisy double-standard America of today. Defining individual freedoms and rights or modeling one’s corner of the world by American norms and standards- is a conspiracy on its own.
With only a youthful 50 years under our eager feet, no matter how noble the intention is, just let’s not push things too fast. Think in our own shoes and act to our own shadows. Overrun effects could be startling and irreversible. We respect and value the non Malay contributions to the well being of our country. We know they work hard, held up their values high and we know that they are just as patriotic as us Bumiputeras. Let’s not even say (or condone) spiteful words like asking anyone to leave or to “go home”. This is home for us all.
We don’t wish for anything special; as economic minorities in our own country we simply wish for our “Hak-hak asasi Melayu”. I am not a racist for bringing this up, nor could anyone else who agrees to this be considers as racist too. How could I be racist when all that I have delved about were just matters concerning to hak-hak asasi Bumiputera? “Hak-hak asasi”, is not even close to being “hak-hak istimewa”.
Now, if non Malay still would term Bumiputera as racist and extremist when we just merely insist on our “hak-hak asasi Melayu”, then it does appear to me that they are just unfolding their very own racist nature and conspiracies for all to see.
assalamualaikum tun,
of course this is the country that we are willing to die for.no doubt about it.

dear tun,
the patriotism of past leaders and their struggles remains to be etched in the minds of our young. we often do not emphasized enough in our history/geographical books about the birth of our nation. i appreciate your reminder and i guess this is the darkest period of modern Malaysia.
Salam TUN n Family!
Thanks for everything n hope TUN always post new article about Malaysia. We really appreciate! Thanks
Selamat sejahtera Ayahanda Tun,
Mereka yg menyokong DSAIpula objektifnya jelas utk menidakkan keistimewaan kita yg kita pegang sejak merdeka.PERMINTAAN SAYA HANYALAH AYAHANDA TERUS PERJUANGKAN AGAR KAMI HIDUP SPT DULU (1980-2003) SEBELUM 16 SEPT ATAU PAU DEC NANTI
Tun,
Semangat nasionalisme kita sangat kurang .
US suka kita mundur sampai sanggup nak manipulate harga komoditi kita, sebab tu depa sayang sangat Kat Anwar. Sebab nak musnahkan keupayaan kitalah tu Anwar suka sangat nak jadi Perdana Menteri. Orang yang alim tak mahu jawatan tapi dia ni terhegeh hegeh tak tahu malu declara dia akan jadi PM. Imej Islam apa yang dia bawa? Entahlah.Yang saya tahu itu imej ajen yahudi.
Tun, terima kasih atas pelajaran sejarah hari ini. Tun, banyak orang muda baca blog Tun. Teruslah mengajar kami. Tapi saya pasti lepas ni si ABI dan Onlooker akan masuk komen entah apa apa asalkan depa against Tun. Kata macam macam pada Tun tapi tak pernah jemu masuk blog Tun. Itu yang paling saya heran.
Entahlah
Hidup Tun...kepimpinan Pak Lah dah semakin tenat, ahli2 UMNO yg ada lani semua kaki Pak Angguk, apa nak jadi dengan ekonomi msia hatta 6 bln akan datang, kehidupan rakyat marhaen semakin tertekan/terhakis...sesungguhnya hanya Tun sahaja lah yg bersemangat wirajati msia...Hidup Tun Mahathir jasamu dikenang selagi hayat dikandung badan
Assalamualaikum ayahanda Tun....yuu're right...i my seelf are one of the beneficiaries of the government through the many policies put up to improve the country after gaining independent. I hope meny others like me would not forgot where they and their parents had started and achieved to this day...yes political and social stability is of upmost important to further take us and our children (the next generation)into the future where each and everyone would live harmoniously together as one nation...without these then whatever have been achieved would be of no value when then everybody thinks everything is for anyone to take without regard of the others. There are lessons to be learnt from our national histories of how we came about to this day...without which we are not able to be where we are today... I wish you well and in good health to further giving your insight for others of all races especially leaders like AAB, LKS, KS, AHA, DSAI and others like them to read and ponder. I am sure they too are among the many readers who are constantly visiting your blogs...
Dear Tun,
I think this is the country that we all still love. For me who leads them is the big question.
Salam Yg Bhg Tun and all,
Becomig too materialistic and selfish are the main factor of our own downfall. Our country are not run by those who cares about the prosperity of the nation like those time but rather being too bothered about their own luxury caused by endless greed.
The country is being brought down and tarnished by selfish materialistics bastards.
It is a problem when people become lazy and content with small achievements. That's the Malaysian mentality. Laziness is a disease. And it spreads.
Salam Tun,
Salam Tun,
I shed tears reading your article this time, Sir.
I am a Malaysian and I love this country too. We must unite and decide for our future. We want a caliber leader to lead us to glory.
We want to achieve Wawasan 2020.
Abdullah Badawi MUST GO!!
Salam Tun,
Thanks for your reminder,I grew up in a predominantly chinese area in KL. I can still vividly remember in the seventies I used to hear 'LU MELAYU SKRU PUN TAK BOLEH BUAT!'Now nobody can say that to us anymore.I thank you Tun for your contributions towards creating a new generation of malays who can now build cars.
To those who refuse to acknowledge Tun's legacy should go and study our nation's history and the social contract.
To those who questions the NEP and labels us as the supreme race, remember that we do not possess even 30% of the nation's wealth.Just take a look at the 10 richest people in Malaysia.8 of them are of Chinese descent, and one each Indian and Malay. Now what does that tell you?
Dearest Tun
Sometimes hardship is character-building. I once heard that potters must put their soft and malleable clay products into the hot oven to be baked before they can be toughened up.
Only the high calibre ones will withstand the heat to emerge a quality product that is durable and lasting.
Perhaps things had become too convenient and too comfortable.
And perhaps that is why UMNOputras have lost their vision and mission of the original party.
Mercedes Benz is chosen because it "saves on maintenance cost"?? Where is the support and pride in the national car?
Another politician is willing to "sell" his nation to foreigners just to fulfill his selfish dreams. Other politicians see the party as a source of easy wealth. Then there is a sleepy one who still has the lullaby songs in his ears, refusing to give way to a more deserving one because the seat has become too comfortable.
Unlike a young passionate man of yesteryear who cycled in any weather with all his "semangat" just to serve his nation.
The warm glow of patriotism is a rare and vanishing commodity. The honour to serve for the nation without material gains is a dying trend.
Sad to see this happening ...
Tun memang hebat.
i'm still wondering why our fellow malaysians keep bringing up the issue about the malay rights,NEP and etc...even they have also questioned about islam being the 'official religion' for our beloved malaysia.we had lived in harmony for years, this is all that matters for a country where its people can live and work altogether towards a brighter future.it seems that the quality of tolerance and respecting each other had deteriorated among us.we should not questioned what our founding fathers had did but to put our effort to live as one nation.stop questioning, love our country and act as a proud MALAYSIAN.
Salam YABhg Tun,
Indeed Tun, a brilliant reminder to us all. We can have a good future provided we have the right spirits, knowledge, attitude, sincerity and confident in what we are doing. As you said it Malaysia Boleh!
I really do hope that we Malaysian(especially All Politicians and leaders of all sorts and wannabes) wake up and start a fresh start, a better start in life for our future not just for power and greed. Lets not become "Traitor to our Country".
Hmmmmmm.... I wonder too....
So come on fellow Malaysian, wake up and start doing something right this time, be it small, it doesn't matter as long as it is right, we have to start somewhere.... enough of just merely talking!
Tun, by the way, my family and I had a nice meal at your "kedai Roti" in Langkawi, too bad did not meet you there... maybe one day in the future...
Salam Tun, Do have a nice day and take care.
MOHARA
salam che det
its true for what u've said. many contributions & developments had been made, especially during your time. but then, things went bad especially when corruption took over sincerity. would u agree? many good things turn bad, many good images, turn dark, & many other things what should be at its best but turn out ugly. as a citizen, i'm indeed very sad with this, especially knowing those who are involved mostly muslims. its true when Prophet s.a.w said all islam are muslim & but not all muslim are mukmin. at this stage we're the worst. everyone outside malaysia knew, how corrupted malaysians are, pls dont deny coz, thats the truth.
Dearest Tun, Malaysia is the country we love, it is the leaders now a days that do not value us but themselves. When I go oversea, I'm still proud of telling people that I'm from Malaysia, but today, they ask me about our leaders scandal, the corruption, the flip flop decision of the government....etc. I was ashame and speechless sometimes.
Assalamualaikum Tun,
I would thank you for the article above. It reminds everyone how you fought and struggled to achieve what we have and relish today. It is so pathetic to hear words from people who claimed they never tasted and graced the prosperity we have in terms of economy and race constancy. Yes i do love the country and would mourn to death if it falters and falls.
Wassalam.
The most important asset of a country is not its natural resources, but rather its human resources. This is especially true in a knowledge-based economy, which of course, will be the trend in the future if not already the trend in most of the western countries.
My daughter, who is in her final year medicine in Auckland, told me that a team of Singapore recruitment officers have just visited Auckland and talked to the Malaysian students there, offering jobs and training prospects for the final year students once they graduate.
My daughter also told me that over the last few years, quite a lot of her Malaysian seniors, after graduating from medical courses in New Zealand, have gone to Singapore to work as house officers and subsequently stayed back in Singapore for their postgraduate training. Similar teams are sent to UK and Australia for recruiting Malaysians there to work in Singapore.
About a year ago, Reuters reported: 'Malaysia is counting on bright, ambitious people like Tan Chye Ling for its future, to lead it away from manufacturing and into the knowledge age.'
But the 32-year-old scientist, a postgraduate in molecular biology, is not counting on Malaysia to look after her future.
'I felt very suppressed in Malaysia,' said Tan, who moved to neighbouring Singapore, the region's pacesetter for biotech investment, after a decade of study and research in Malaysia.
'I have benefited from the better research environment and salary scheme here. Things are much smoother,' she said by phone from the National University of Singapore where she is studying dust mites and allergies. Tan estimates that 60 percent of the research teams she works with in Singapore are from Malaysia, despite her country's efforts over several years to develop a biotech industry.
There is a serious problem facing Malaysia and that is the problem of 'brain drain'. Why are Malaysians overseas not coming back to work? Well, pay may be part of the reasons but it is not the main reason. Singapore recruitment teams offer Malaysian medical students a salary which is a few times what they would expect to get in Malaysia S$40000 a year for houseman after tax (equivalent to RM86000) which is about five times the pay of a houseman in Malaysia.
But, as I say, pay is not the main problem. The living expense overseas is high. And for a person working overseas, the loneliness and the stress level is also high. So not everyone opts to work overseas because of the pay. Many would not mind to work for a lesser pay if they can stay near to their loved ones. So why do people choose to work overseas, away from their loved ones?
Malaysia has many state-of-the-arts hospitals and research centres, which may even be the envy of many overseas countries. But hardware alone would not attract these experts to come home. In the medical field, I have so many friends/classmates working overseas, many in world-renowned centres. Why do they do that? Some of my friends and classmates did come back as specialists. After working a few years (many only lasted a few months), most got disillusioned and went off again.
There is really not much prospect of career advancement here. How many can hope to become a professor even when they are an acknowledged expert in their field? On the other hands, lesser beings are being promoted to professorship for doing much less. How many of them can have a say about how things are to be run? How many of them can blend into the local team where the work attitude is vastly different from that overseas?
There is an unwritten rule that even if the person is very good, the head of the team has to be someone from a certain ethnic group who may not be even half as good as him. In everyday life, some become disillusioned with the corruption, the red tape and the 'tidak apa' attitude of officialdom. For an overseas doctor applying to work back home, the application can take up to six months to get approved, whereas Singapore sends teams overseas to recruit them on the spot and offering them jobs immediately as long as they pass their final examinations. See the difference?
It is the sense of being wanted and being appreciated that make these people stay overseas. Back here, they are often made to feel that they are of a lower class. They do not feel wanted and they do not feel appreciated. That is the main reason.
For those with children, the education system further puts them off. Even school children can feel being discriminated against and one glaring example is the two system pre-university education.
All these make them pack their bags and off they go again, leaving behind their parents, perhaps their siblings, the friends they grew up together with and their favourite food that is often not available overseas. No one likes to be away from home but circumstances and a sense of being recognised for their worth make them go away. It is really sad.
Parents spend big sums of money on educating their children but the ones who benefit most are the Singaporeans, the British, the Australians, the Americans and so on. As long as race politics is not done away with, this problem of 'brain drain' will continue and Malaysia will always trail behind the advanced countries no matter how many Twin Towers and Putrajaya we build.
Tun,
you are right. We have today become too materialistic and selfish. It is everyone for himself. And that is sad because if all Malaysians were to work for a common good, I'm sure we will succeed.
Certainly, this is the country we love. While holidaying in Melbourne in 2002, I met a Malaysian student, a young Malay boy. He smiled at me and so did I. He asked me, "Malaysian?". I replied "yes". His eyes gleamed and we rushed to hug each other.
We Malaysians must love each other. Care for one another without giving second thought to race, religion, status etc. The way things are now, we are making a mockery of our beloved country for all to see.
We have to come together, hug one another and work for a better tomorrow. Now.
YABhg. Tun,
Salam hormat.
Tetapi bagaimana hendak dicapai. Kami masih tertanya-tanya..
Dear Tun,
I left the country in 1990 to work at our branch office in Jakarta and what was supposedly to be a 2-year stint became 14 years, plus a beautiful Indonesian wife and 3 cute kids.
I remembered how proud I was when I went to the Hajj from Indonesia. On reaching the Arab soil, the Arabs was amazed that I was a Malaysian in an all Indonesian pilgrim troupe. They proclaimed, "Malaysia is good my brother, Mahathir Mohammed is good my brother!" I get special treatment wherever I go vis-a vis my other fellow pilgrim brothers.
I remembered I was proud seeing people of all races flying the Malaysian flag on their vehicles on my short annual visits back to Malaysia circa August.
I remembered how driving around Lebuh Ampang to Petaling street to Bukit Bintang and back took about 20 minutes to cover. And over the years that short trip has developed to a 45 to 60 minutes round trip.
I remembered that I now do not have to explain to the Yankees on my trips to the US, where Malaysia was. It used to be either near Bali or Vietnam.
I remembered watching on TV in one of the UMNO general assemblies, you cried and ask for everybody to refrain from money politics. You used the words to the tune of " Don't make corruption as part of our culture like one of our neighboring country".
I remembered pestering my wife to repatriate back from a country where pushing 'envelopes' was second nature, where Members of Parliament sat in comfy stretched limos, where Generals are involved in businesses, where 'connections' are important to stay alive and be around.
Only to find now , it's Indonesia all over again. This time in Malaysia.
I know for sure how our Indonesian brothers and sisters are trying very hard to eradicate corruption that has settled deep down into their everyday lives. A task that is really challenging until this day.
And Malaysia is now at the state of Indonesia circa 1997-1998.
They took 32 years to slowly slide down, Malaysia Boleh takes only 4 to 5 years and we are rolling down real fast.
It's sad to see this guy pulling down many of what you've struggled to invest and gambled to make Malaysia in the forefront, on the map of the world. Gone was also your vision 2020, I can bet my last Dollar that Malaysia will NOT achieve what we want as we are indeed on a reverse gear mode these days, thanks to Mr. Incapable Dollah Hadhari.
So to answer your last question Tun...
I was proud of our country when you were the Prime Minister Tun. Proud of you too.
I lost it when this Hadhari Imam took over! He has become a Prime Joke!
Salam Tun Pak Det,
Amaze.. to see how our elders work out to build the nation. Intellectuals those days were more sincere and fabricate our economic strength to the best level during your time.
Unfortunately when the power passed over to present low IQ , poor reader , easily influenced by greedy young SIL , day dreamer , backward strategist and power craze half past six Kepala Batas origin has successfully turned our beloved country into lots of stress.
Many instances this semi conscious guy manipulated his own/ dining table decision to run the country. Overruled existing govt expenditure policies for their own pockets. For him , the most important is HIMSELF , no need cabinets collective decision, the hell with grass root criticism , listen to "kaki AMPU" and keep himself in power before hand it over to SIL. This real joker, I strongly believed has certain collaboration with Pak Sheh DSAI the outstanding worldclass political actor awww!!
Dear Malaysian ,back to basic ...TAQWA LEADER will get guidance from ALLAH to lead us. Yakin to the most POWERFUL CREATOR-ALLAH!
i am finally the first. Please visit my blog at www.hailtheking.wordpress.com
Tun i admire you and i am waiting for your memoir to come out.
i assure everybody that it will beat LKY's memoir.
Hope to read it soon.
Dear Tun,
My conclusion is that currently we are having hsaprak and HP6 leaders led by a lame duck Pak Lah who has not contributed anything to move the country forward. It is frigtening to see our country is regressing instead of progressing for the last 5 years under Pak Lah.
This is a fact and nobody can deny it. Most of the rakyat are not "blind, deaf and dumb". They know what sort of quality our leaders have, particularly Pak Lah. The last election had been proven right. The rakyat totally rejected Pak Lah.
Tun,
syabas...
Tun komen le sikit, perkembangan memoir Tun. Ramai yang tak sabar2 ni.
Salam Tun,
Sounds like 'rakyat' should learn more about the HISTORY
of our beloved country. Thanks for your posting
and i'm relly enjoyed.
May Allah bless you & family
True.. most of us not really know about this. Like me, I borned in your leadership which brought many developement to the country.. I hope you still can give our beloved citizen more advices to make sure our conutry can still growth and stable
Bravo Malaysian...........!
Love my Country...
but there is some one out there not feel this cause he's at the very top.........
Tun,
I agree that we are the beneficiaries of the good job by early people work, but then the current leaders who were trusted to do the job are failed to carry their duties properly. As such its time to reshuffle so that one will realize that this country is owned by Rakyat Malaysia and not just a portion of corrupted and arrogant leaders.

Tun, we love still love this this country. that's why we want the ydp pm pl to resign now!
Tun,
Yes, we still love our country. For that, we want ydp pm pl to resign NOW!
Salam Tun.
Dear TUN Dr Mahathir...
Bravo..! Hidup TUN..! (--jek sakan nampak..?)
Dasyhat..! THE COUNTRY WE LOVE..? IS it still.?
During independence from the British.. It was all about devide and conquere..!
Now Malaysia's treat is from the United States of Aparika.??
This is also the reason why you had to hand over the Administration.. Kan.? Kan.? Kan.?
If it wasn't for the United Apatika pressuring you.. I think you will still be PM..
US kata Malaysia Terrorist konon..??
Mauhahahahah...!!!!
And yes.. We would be better.. But I doutb it.. We were heading for the worst anyways.. We all in the same world.
The Aparika uses a method of FEAR and Suffering.. They inflict fear of being attacked to the inhabitants.. If they can't conquere us by making the people suffer economically then they would twist the facts and promote in medias to make us look like extreme terrorist..! and BOMB us... again submiting to their will and power.
Again Poverty.. By disabling the economic power of the people.. They now could conquere us..!
++ with weakest government.. Make it very easy for Aparika... All these decisions the gov is making are following the request of the Aparika..
Now, about FDI.. Malaysia needs it.. Most now.. Especially when Pak Sleeping Beauty.. is BANTAIng everything for 'mereka and keluarga mereka'.. Need FDI sangat2.!
But we must SLEEP with the ENEMY sometimes.. Keep your friends close, but keep your enemy closer.. The WORLD BANK is in NEW YORK daaaa.... you pun tau sapa control..
But Sleeping with the Enemy sampai tergadai maruah dan body.. rasa2nya tak Melayu lah...
So how do we make sure they don't BALAS us when we sleep with them..? That is what TUN have done so far for us.. Shielding us the RAKYAT from the wrong doing of foreign powers and money..
During TUN's time... Fuel subsidies.. NEPs.. Benefits and Insentives.. to help stimulate the economy although the world's economy was going to shit.!
This is my view of the current situation.. On UMno I see that Not Pak Sleeping Beauty, Mr Yes Man or Opportunies T or even Muhyiddin would make the best Presiden.. Best would be for the people to decide who they really want especially their elected representative of the RAKYAT that the party really needs.. If it doesn't rectify its mistake this time around.. Malaysia will be a PAS govern.. country.. Why don't we Just fight it out amongst us and get the best leader and move forward.. Do what is really best for our future.. Our OWN future.. I do really love my country.. I value my religion, race and country mostly..
Melayu Unite.!
for the benefit of Malaysia our beloved country..!
PM must step down now.! Cukup2 la rosakkan negara..
White Ribbon.??
White Flags.??
All the Best TUN,
Salam perjuangan,

Assalamualaikum wbh;
4) Development of Setiu, bolehkah Tun terangkan sedikit?
6) Hanya Dato Seri Idris yg sanggup mengeluarkan kata-kata kepada PM didlm MT: "I'm sorry Sir, but YOU SHOULD RESIGN".
It was the King's right". Kenapa?
That's why I'm chasing for your feedback.
Terima kasih.
Salam Tun,
Terimakasih atas penulisan sejarah ini. Malangnya Pak Lah nak bawa Malaysia kembali ke zaman dulu. Over dependence to commodity especially oil. Masjid Kristal? Kilang makin banyak ditutup dizaman Pak Lah. Pak Lah the other hand suruh kita bertani balik. Macamana nak create jobs.
We want Dr M back.
Though it is educating to know the history and i thank the previous leaders for their contribution but like Tun,i'm also concern about our future. The current state of economy is not promising with the leaders (BN or otherwise) still "politiking" on unimportant issues. AAB and his current team has done their best and it is time for them to let a new team to run the country. I would like to see new team who are more economic and business savvy. Malaysia for Malaysians!
Akum, Dr M
First of all, congratulations for being honoured in The Sultan Abdul Hamid's 100 years celebration. MASIH ADA YANG SAYANG!
Just to put on record that statement.
Have a nice day and take care.
Tun, great article to remind us all the humble beginnings, and the humble dreams we had once upon a time. Its with leaders like you that we superceeded our dreams, and become one of the most admirable developing countries in the world, at least till lately.
I live abroad, and often when I meet and chat with foreigners, there are in awe of Malaysia, and what we had achieved. Many of the projects we had launched, for which we had so many criticisms at home, put us on the map, and foreigners saw us as a vibrant economy worth investing in, and a role model all in all. They made referenc to your dynamic leadership, and they wished their countries had leaders like you. That made me proud and I stood tall as a Malaysian.
Of late, its becoming shame to be called a Malaysian. All the news that comes from home, are tales of ineffecive leaders, corrupt leaders, selfish, immoral etc etc. And all at the expene of the Malaysia we love - these people care less for the country.
I spoke to some middle eastern bankers lately and they related to me how they are starting to withdraw/minimise investments in Malaysia, as they do not see any more the safe haven, and the dynamic, progressive economy it was. My heart bleeds to hear that.
I hope the day will come soon when we will be out of this mess, but looking at was is going now, that hope may have to remain a hope for a long time more, thanks to ineffective, immoral and power hungry selfish leaders we have today.
TDM - Malaysia misses your leadership!
Chedet,
"Is it still the country we love? I wonder!"
Aaah, so very true. Today some Malaysians love Australia more.
salam,
nice info tun..keep it up...thank you.
Salams Tun.
A very good write-up. This is a reminder to the people today of how our early leaders worked hard to make the country rich and peaceful. We study history as a reminder of how we attain what we have today. We should not take things for granted. I agree Tun that most of the people especially the leaders of today are being selfish and materialistic. Leaders of today should see to it that ALL the people can survive comfortably;sadly, only the 'selected few' are living lavishly while a majority find it difficult to live with the increase in prices. When the government says, change your lifesyle..they are the onces who should do the changing..not us.
Assalamualaikum Tun.
